It's summer, and it actually feels like summer in Finland too, which is surprising but lovely. Anyways, new Friday Five:

1) If you could be either a fish or a bird, which would you be, and why?

Probably a bird? Seas are cool but like, I think the average fish is in much larger danger than the average bird. Plus flying would be awesome.

2) Would you rather it be 10 degrees too hot or 10 degrees too cold? (Does your answer change if that’s indoors or outdoors?)

Answer doesn't change based on location and like, that depends on what too hot and cold means? My ideal temperature is ~25-35C, and +10C to that is dangerous but -10C to that isn't even though I don't like it, I'm used to it. And barely never get to >25C ;;

3) What is the best thing that happened to you today?

It's early morning, so nothing has really happened yet ^^'

4) Is youth wasted on the young? (Follow-up: are you old or young?)

Wha? Kinda? I'm mid-20s. And I'm wasting everything~

5) Pasta salad or potato salad?

Hmm. Both are good. Pasta salad, maybe.

It's been a while (again><) but the new Friday Five is fun. I should do a CD update post at some point...

Anyways,

Would you rather [entertainment version]...

1. Download music // buy a CD

Buy a CD! I'll sometimes download hard-to-get things 💀 but I really love collecting CDs and music is one of the few "frivolous" things I spend money on.

2. Use MP3 player // Use CD Player

Use a CD player if I'm listening to a whole album, an MP3 player when listening to random things on shuffle.

3. Watch a movie at a theater // Rent a video

Neither? I guess a theater (I don't even know where the nearest rental place is...) but when I watch movies (which is rarely), I'd rather just stream.

4. Amusement park for the day // Picnic in a park for a day

Hmm, both are nice but I think amusement park, just because it's been so long and I'm kind of curious if I'd still like rides. I might get a chance to go to a nice one at some point this summer!

5. Read a magazine // Dollage with a magazine

Read. But I rarely do that either.

I haven't posted in a bit but there's a new Friday Five (on Monday Morning 😴 ) so~

Would you rather [hobbies version]...
1. shop // sunbathe

I like warmth, but not really sunbathing necessarily as such? Well, with a book or something it's nice. Shopping can be fun, I can spend hours in a good CD store ^_^' Let's say sunbathing when it's warm >>> shopping when it's cold but shopping when it's warm > sunbathing when it's warm. No one sunbathes while it's cold, obviously (well, this is not true, people do. I don't.).

2. dance // sing
I seriously suck at both but enjoy them immensely. Somehow last year I ended up doing both in the company of other people for the first time since secondary school (and in high school the dancing was Fancy Dances in a ~prom; furitsuke during gigs obviously doesn't count as dancing 😳). Getting me to dance or sing somewhere where other people can see/hear usually requires fairly large amounts of alcohol and I promise you'll regret it.

3. watch college football // watch NFL
No handegg for me thanks 😛

4. write // read
I like(d) writing, but I really like reading. I didn't read much for a while but I've been trying to change that lately : )

5. chat online with friends // hang out with friends
Idk, I like both, I very rarely hang out with any friends irl these days, but in principle the latter? I'd definitely much rather chat online with some friends than hang out with others. Both in moderation, though

It's been so EFdkəœıĸj߀ðoing cold lately ;; last week was <-15C every weekday, it warmed a bit the last two days but it was -16C again this morning. And so much snow. Aaaaaaaa give me spring.

Winter Questions in the Friday Five (╬ Ò ‸ Ó)(╬ Ò ‸ Ó)

1. What are your feelings about snow?
Fuck snooooowwwwjh kasnmd as hdJAH sthere's so much snow it's been snowing all day

2. What is the one thing you really dislike that is associated with snow
Its inherent snowness

3 What is the one thing you really like that is associated with snow
When snow melts in the spring

4. Do you anticipate or dread bad weather reports?
??!?? Dread

5. Are you dreaming of a White Christmas?
Yes it's definitely one of my nightmares, and a very likely one at that

Tbh for the last question, it's fine since I can stay indoors. It looks nice. As long as I'm warm and don't have to be anywhere near it.

I posted this to my Tumblr (got the questions from @mywitfailsme 's Tumblr), but I should post here more so cross-posting it :| Bunch of pointless & most likely boring answers to assorted questions~ (Fingers crossed that the cut works!)

It's been a while! I haven't really had anything special to post about for a long time and haven't really been feeling like posting anything either, but, well, I feel like it now and the new Friday Five is music related again. Aalso, I have an hour to kill before an exercise class I'm TAing, which isn't enough for anything productive (I'm also full of pizza so I couldn't be bothered anyways ^_^').

1) What is the first song you remember from your childhood?

It's difficult to figure out the relative times of these, so I'll just link a few possibilities:

1) Recorded children's music: Eg. This song by a band that makes (made?) children's songs, I had a VHS that had a story for every song (this is a version of a "lion-hunting song" where they end up running away because lions are scary).

2) Non-recorded children's music: Eg. A bedtime song my mum sang to me.

3) TV theme songs: Eg. The Moomin theme, since it's is a show for every Finnish kid born in the 90s watched.

I know my parents also made me listen to Mozart when I was a baby, but I don't remember that, and there is also pop music I was subjected to, but it's hard to time any of the songs >_>

2) What is the first music you purchased with your own money?

Probably Dir en grey's Withering to death (2005). I must've been given some CDs as presents before that, but I never really got *that* into music before getting into J-music.

3) What's a piece of music that you know by heart?

Like, the lyrics? Waaaaay too many to count, hah!

4) What's a song that makes you turn off the music right away?

I very very rarely listen to radio, and when I do, I'm not the one controlling it (so I can't turn it away). And I obviously don't have songs I dislike that much on my PC...

5) And why?

N/A, see previous answer :(

Ok, that took a good 30 minutes, excellent!

Half an hour until the next lecture and I couldn't be bothered to go to the store so here's a Friday Five.

1. Have you come to the conclusion that your parents music (music popular in their time) isn't so bad?

Depends I guess? I never thought it's particularly bad compared to the popular music today, but popular music in general? Ew : P dons hipster glasses

2. Is there a song/group/singer you once adored, but don't now?

Yeaaah but really only from when I was like, younger than 13. I guess Sonata Arctica was the last one, I stopped listening to them around that age.

3. Is there a song/group/singer you once despised, but is okay now?

Too many to name! With a lot of them I just assumed I wouldn't like them because of the genre or style or whatever and found myself enjoying the music once I actually listened to them, but an example I always think of where I'd listened to the band years before I started enjoying the music is 東京事変 / Tokyo Jihen, mostly due to the vocalist's voice requiring some time to get used to.

4. Have you ever heard a favorite song and suddenly had a reinterpretation its meaning?

I don't think so... I'm generally kind of weird when it comes to lyrics, the voice of vocalists (voices in general) and the way the lyrics sound is really important to me, but I very rarely think about the meaning when I listen to a song, and instead do that separately by looking up the lyrics? Idk if that makes sense.

5. What song would you just as soon never hear again?

The advantage of only really listening to music you like is that this almost never happens ^_^'

Have been very bad at posting recently due to being in the mountains for a summer school and actually doing things with other people (ikr!? X_X). Lots of pretty mountains, old towns, waterfalls and walking and deer and cool people and stuff. I've spammed copious amounts of pictures to the LGC discord, might post some here too after I return to Finland in a ~week. The lectures and things have also been very interesting, but I've admittedly gotten fairly little actual PhD work done in the last three weeks. But I guess meeting other people and learning new things and enjoying the lovely weather and having fun is also important. I meant to write something else here too but I forgot what. Oh well, maybe I'll update this...

A meeting got postponed so here's today's [community profile] thefridayfive

1) What's the weather like where you are today?

It's pretty windy for Helsinki, 35 kph / 22 mph regularly and 72 kph / 45 mph gusts. My hair was all over my face this morning. Other than that it's nice, sunny and not very warm @ 18C / 65F.

2) How does this type of weather make you feel?

I'm fine with it, the wind doesn't bother me as much and at least it's above 15C 😒

3) What's your favourite time of year (thinking about the weather)?

Summer for sure! I like the warmth. Finnish winter and autumn are awful and while (normal) springs are OK, and it's nice that everything is getting green, it's the allergy season for me and, well, things are still green in summer.

4) Is there any weather that just makes you want to hide away indoors?

Obviously? Too much rain, snow or cold.

5) If you were moving somewhere purely for the climate, where would it be - what's your perfect year-round weather scenario?

Iii don't know, but somewhere warmer. Probably not a tropical place, but let's say I wouldn't miss seeing snow.

France next Monday! 🙌 I have to wake up so early omg no >_>

(From [community profile] thefridayfive, thanks [personal profile] wolfpurplemoon)

It's Friday, more or less everyone else left uni already and I'm bored & tired so here's a "The Friday Five" about summer.

1. Have you ever been to summer camp?
I have, yes! Scout camps, theatre camps, science camps 🤓 (They weren't "proper" camps though, you went to a science center every morning and went back home for the night),...

2. If so, was it fun or did you hate it?
They were fun! I usually had some friends who were in the same camp, and there was always a nice balance of pre-planned activities and just wandering around with friends, and you ended up learning or doing something new.

3. If not, did you ever wish you had?
-

4. What movie says "Summer Time" to you?
This is a tough one :X I feel like I don't really watch enough movies to give a good answer.

5. Did movies like "Friday the 13th" put you off summer camp?
Nah, all the summer camp movies &c I saw when I was summer camp-aged showed them in a positive light.

Appropriate timing with these questions. Summer solstice & midsummer are next week and I'm going to a summer school in France in just a couple of weeks for a month (and will have a few weeks of actual summer vacation after that, too 😱) – I guess summer schools are the PhD student equivalent to summer camps XD

Hi 👋

star_fish: (Default)
Pippa (inadvertently?) guilt-tripped me into posting something with her intro post so here goes I guess ^^' I figured I'd do an intro post as well, especially since I don't think I've written one anywhere in ten or so years.

So hi all! I'm 23, living in Finland and have lived here all my life. Which I'm currently not very happy about, since this "spring" has been absolutely awful, up to and including snow until a few weeks ago (possibly more this week). Winter lasted for 8 months and I've been ready for summer since March >< BUT I'm spending about half of the summer elsewhere, hopefully not taking the terrible weather with me, which is good.

I already started talking about the weather, huh, I should probably stop...

I'm a PhD student in theoretical physics [perturbative QCD at the moment, possibly dabbling in lattice things in the near future] in the university of Helsinki. My days usually consist of hunting the web for scientific papers and books & reading them, being mad at my PC for not giving me the correct kinds of infinities, browsing the web & talking in Discord and maybe listening to a seminar or a meeting. Fun fun.

I always feel like I have nothing to say with these posts, and I feel like I don't tend to "do" much or have anything interesting to say about myself. I really really enjoy listening to music and going to gigs, even if I don't often have the chance these days, rarely watch movies or TV shows, like reading (with mixed success as of late) and playing games (WoW mostly, also with mixed success as of late). I always used to add roleplaying to this list, too, I spent most of my weekends playing different games at one point, but I haven't played in so long, so I guess it's time to drop it off the list. Instead, I've been walking a lot, it's actually pretty nice. What am I turning into smh ;_;

I (along with most who are reading this, I guess, unless my DW becomes super popular in the future and people read this post) joined DW last week with the impending closure of imzy. I was @starless there, but I decided to try to change my Internet name earlier this year. I actually like this site as far as first impressions go! Which is weird since I never really did like LJ ^^' I'm most likely still going to be bad at actually blogging, but who knows!

Intro posts are the worst >_> If anyone wants, they can try to ask questions, but no promises re: answers
