It's been a while! I haven't really had anything special to post about for a long time and haven't really been feeling like posting anything either, but, well, I feel like it now and the new Friday Five is music related again. Aalso, I have an hour to kill before an exercise class I'm TAing, which isn't enough for anything productive (I'm also full of pizza so I couldn't be bothered anyways ^_^').

1) What is the first song you remember from your childhood?

It's difficult to figure out the relative times of these, so I'll just link a few possibilities:

1) Recorded children's music: Eg. This song by a band that makes (made?) children's songs, I had a VHS that had a story for every song (this is a version of a "lion-hunting song" where they end up running away because lions are scary).

2) Non-recorded children's music: Eg. A bedtime song my mum sang to me.

3) TV theme songs: Eg. The Moomin theme, since it's is a show for every Finnish kid born in the 90s watched.

I know my parents also made me listen to Mozart when I was a baby, but I don't remember that, and there is also pop music I was subjected to, but it's hard to time any of the songs >_>

2) What is the first music you purchased with your own money?

Probably Dir en grey's Withering to death (2005). I must've been given some CDs as presents before that, but I never really got *that* into music before getting into J-music.

3) What's a piece of music that you know by heart?

Like, the lyrics? Waaaaay too many to count, hah!

4) What's a song that makes you turn off the music right away?

I very very rarely listen to radio, and when I do, I'm not the one controlling it (so I can't turn it away). And I obviously don't have songs I dislike that much on my PC...

5) And why?

N/A, see previous answer :(

Ok, that took a good 30 minutes, excellent!

Half an hour until the next lecture and I couldn't be bothered to go to the store so here's a Friday Five.

1. Have you come to the conclusion that your parents music (music popular in their time) isn't so bad?

Depends I guess? I never thought it's particularly bad compared to the popular music today, but popular music in general? Ew : P dons hipster glasses

2. Is there a song/group/singer you once adored, but don't now?

Yeaaah but really only from when I was like, younger than 13. I guess Sonata Arctica was the last one, I stopped listening to them around that age.

3. Is there a song/group/singer you once despised, but is okay now?

Too many to name! With a lot of them I just assumed I wouldn't like them because of the genre or style or whatever and found myself enjoying the music once I actually listened to them, but an example I always think of where I'd listened to the band years before I started enjoying the music is 東京事変 / Tokyo Jihen, mostly due to the vocalist's voice requiring some time to get used to.

4. Have you ever heard a favorite song and suddenly had a reinterpretation its meaning?

I don't think so... I'm generally kind of weird when it comes to lyrics, the voice of vocalists (voices in general) and the way the lyrics sound is really important to me, but I very rarely think about the meaning when I listen to a song, and instead do that separately by looking up the lyrics? Idk if that makes sense.

5. What song would you just as soon never hear again?

The advantage of only really listening to music you like is that this almost never happens ^_^'

Have been very bad at posting recently due to being in the mountains for a summer school and actually doing things with other people (ikr!? X_X). Lots of pretty mountains, old towns, waterfalls and walking and deer and cool people and stuff. I've spammed copious amounts of pictures to the LGC discord, might post some here too after I return to Finland in a ~week. The lectures and things have also been very interesting, but I've admittedly gotten fairly little actual PhD work done in the last three weeks. But I guess meeting other people and learning new things and enjoying the lovely weather and having fun is also important. I meant to write something else here too but I forgot what. Oh well, maybe I'll update this...

A meeting got postponed so here's today's [community profile] thefridayfive

1) What's the weather like where you are today?

It's pretty windy for Helsinki, 35 kph / 22 mph regularly and 72 kph / 45 mph gusts. My hair was all over my face this morning. Other than that it's nice, sunny and not very warm @ 18C / 65F.

2) How does this type of weather make you feel?

I'm fine with it, the wind doesn't bother me as much and at least it's above 15C 😒

3) What's your favourite time of year (thinking about the weather)?

Summer for sure! I like the warmth. Finnish winter and autumn are awful and while (normal) springs are OK, and it's nice that everything is getting green, it's the allergy season for me and, well, things are still green in summer.

4) Is there any weather that just makes you want to hide away indoors?

Obviously? Too much rain, snow or cold.

5) If you were moving somewhere purely for the climate, where would it be - what's your perfect year-round weather scenario?

Iii don't know, but somewhere warmer. Probably not a tropical place, but let's say I wouldn't miss seeing snow.

(From [community profile] thefridayfive, thanks [personal profile] wolfpurplemoon)

It's Friday, more or less everyone else left uni already and I'm bored & tired so here's a "The Friday Five" about summer.

1. Have you ever been to summer camp?
I have, yes! Scout camps, theatre camps, science camps 🤓 (They weren't "proper" camps though, you went to a science center every morning and went back home for the night),...

2. If so, was it fun or did you hate it?
They were fun! I usually had some friends who were in the same camp, and there was always a nice balance of pre-planned activities and just wandering around with friends, and you ended up learning or doing something new.

3. If not, did you ever wish you had?
-

4. What movie says "Summer Time" to you?
This is a tough one :X I feel like I don't really watch enough movies to give a good answer.

5. Did movies like "Friday the 13th" put you off summer camp?
Nah, all the summer camp movies &c I saw when I was summer camp-aged showed them in a positive light.

Appropriate timing with these questions. Summer solstice & midsummer are next week and I'm going to a summer school in France in just a couple of weeks for a month (and will have a few weeks of actual summer vacation after that, too 😱) – I guess summer schools are the PhD student equivalent to summer camps XD
